BEAUMONT, Texas — Due to COVID and other illnesses, the Lamar men’s basketball team hasn’t played a game since December 30, but that will be changing later this week.
The Cardinals are scheduled to host Sam Houston Thursday night, and according to Head Coach Alvin Brooks Big Red is ready to go.
Lamar will have at least eight player suited up, with hopes of having ten available by the time Thursday gets here.
LU is coming off back-to-back forfeit losses to New Mexico State and Grand Canyon, and while an (0-3) start in WAC play is tough, Coach Brooks is happy to have his team back.
“You know we’re just kind glad to get guys back really. I’ve done this a long time and last week was the first time I’ve ever practiced with five guys and six guys like for the course of the week. You know somebody asked me, what if you’d had those injuries, amount of injuries and you only had six guys would you have played? I said well you’re talking about a hypothetical that’s totally different. We’re talking about a virus. You know injuries don’t spread. You know, nobody becomes infected with injuries. It’s a different thing when you have a virus. So guys playing with the virus, they not sure they have it. Now they pass it to other guys and as a result we had thirteen in the program over an eight day stretch. And that didn’t even include the non-COVID illness.”
